The aim of Chartered Physiotherapy is to reduce pain, correct movement dysfunction and prevent a recurrent episode. While there are various practitioners treating musculo-skeletal pain in Ireland, Chartered Physiotherapists are degree-trained health professionals. Our training is based on scientific, evidence-based practice to ensure the highest possible standard of care.
Examples of commonly used treatment techniques are :
Manual Therapy and Manipulation
Manual Therapy techniques are used by expert Chartered Physiotherapists to mobilise the spine and peripheral (limb) joints, neural structures and soft tissues. The aim is to reduce pain; increase joint range of movement/soft tissue flexibility; reduce inflammation; and reduce muscle spasm.
Manipulation is a high-velocity passive movement which moves the joint beyond its normal range of movement. This is accompanied by cavitation or gapping of the joint, often creating a “crack” sound. Research indicates that this often results in pain reduction and induces relaxation of the surrounding muscles.
As part of your physiotherapy treatment, we will recommend exercises for you to do to facilitate your recovery. These may be focused on stretching, muscle control, strengthening, balance or a combination of everything!
We appreciate that it can be hard to retain everything you learn in a physiotherapy session, so when you leave we will email you a link to our Salaso software programme. This will allow you to access your own personal exercise account where you will view professional videos of your prescribed exercises, including details on how many to do and how often!
Rehabilitation incorporates all aspects of treatment and management options following an injury or musculoskeletal surgery. At Imokilly Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic we are experienced in guiding you through the important stages of your recovery, in the months following your surgery, to ensure that you achieve an excellent outcome. We are delighted to have an on-site rehab gym equipped with a treadmill, Wattbike, cable weights machine and small equipment that you can access to facilitate your recovery.
Taping and Strapping
At Imokilly Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic we often incorporate the use of taping or strapping to facilitate your recovery and/or prompt return to activity. The most commonly used tape for joint stability is rigid zinc oxide tape while Kinesiotape (the colourful tape that you may have seen athletes wearing on TV) is believed to be useful in giving a muscle increased sensory information.
We also offer pre-match strapping, to individuals and teams, to minimize the risk of injuries.
