Sports injuries can present in a number of different ways such as:

“Sprains and Strains”
Muscle tears: hamstring, calf, hip flexor, quad
Tendinopathy: Achilles, Patellar, tennis elbow and golfers elbow
Shin Splints / stress fractures
Ligament sprains and tears: ankle sprain / ACL injuries
Cartilage injuries: acromioclavicular joint / knee joint
Rib bruising and injuries

Our Chartered Physiotherapists have been involved in the care of a number of elite teams during their careers, including Munster Rugby Academy, Clare Senior Hurlers and the National New Zealand Basketball team.  We are currently proud to be team physiotherapists for Midleton Rugby Club and Father O’Neills GAA club over the last number of seasons.  We consequently understand the importance of a prompt appointment, comprehensive assessment and accurate diagnosis.  Should any further scans or investigations, or a consultant referral, be required we will help you access them as quickly as possible.

As the first question we are asked by our sports injured patients is “How quickly can I get back to training?”, the following tips will expedite your recovery:

Protect – In the early phase consider using crutches to take the weight off an ankle or knee injury
Optimise Loading – If it doesn’t aggravate the pain, using the injured part gently will help to speed up your healing
Ice – Although the evidence isn’t conclusive, it is generally recommended to ice the injured part for 10-20 mins, 2-3 times per day for the first 5-7 days – just be careful not to get an ice burn!
Compression – A compression bandage or tubigrip also helps minimise the swelling. The area should feel compressed but not uncomfortable or painful.
Elevation – Raise your hand or foot up on pillows

It is then important to get an early physiotherapy assessment so that you can further optimise the healing and get back training as quickly as possible. If treatment is the primary management then it will be efficient, evidence-based and take your sporting needs into account, including liaising with your team coach/manager.

"Chronic Achilles tendinopathy was limiting my ability to progress my marathon training and I knew that I had to tackle it properly to allow it to heal.  Although it was frustrating to step back from training, I am now running painfree and hoping for a marathon PB"   ED (St Finbarrs)
